Overcoming Hip Pain: Find Relief and Resume Your Active Lifestyle

Do you experience hip pain while enjoying leisurely walks, climbing stairs, or bending down? Hip pain can significantly limit your ability to perform and enjoy daily activities. Fortunately, physical therapy at Professional Care can help you find relief and get back to doing what you love!

Understanding Your Hip Joints

Your hips are ball-and-socket joints, where your femur (thigh bone) fits into your pelvis (hip socket). A cushion of cartilage in your hips prevents friction as your hip bone moves within the socket. Pain can occur if this cartilage wears down or is damaged due to age, injury, or overuse.

There are several reasons why you may be experiencing hip pain, and our team will work with you to determine the specific factors causing yours:

  • Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is a common cause of hip pain, particularly in older adults. It occurs when the protective cartilage in the hip joint wears down over time, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
  • Tears and Ruptures
Ligaments and cartilage in the hips can tear due to injury or overuse, causing pain and instability.
  • Strains
Sudden or repetitive activities can strain or inflame the muscles and tendons around the hip joint, resulting in pain.
  • Bursitis
Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that act as a cushion between the bones, tendons, and muscles near the hip. Bursitis, or inflammation of these sacs, can cause pain and tenderness in the hip.

Addressing Your Hip Pain with Physical Therapy

The good news is that physical therapy is a highly effective treatment for hip pain, regardless of the cause. Our PTs will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment program based on the underlying cause of your pain. We can offer:

  • Pain Relief
Specialized techniques, such as manual therapy, joint mobilizations, and soft tissue techniques, can help improve blood flow, free up tension or restriction in movement, and reduce pain in the affected areas.
  • Mobility Work
Prescribed exercises to improve movement and range of motion in the hip joint.
  • Strengthening Exercises
Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the hip joint, providing support and stability for a successful recovery.

How We Can Help with Sports-Related Hip Pain

Athletes often develop hip pain, sometimes due to overuse and sometimes due to sudden injuries, such as a hip labral tear. In these cases, the team at ProCare Athletic Performance can be invaluable in getting you back in the game.

Our athletic performance coaches collaborate with our Professional Care physical therapists to ensure you get the targeted treatment you need while guiding you through sport-specific exercises designed to improve your overall function so you can safely return to sport.

Patient Example: Personalized Hip Pain Relief

A recreational basketball player sought help at our clinic after suffering from persistent hip pain caused by an injury sustained during training. Her pain had gradually intensified over the past few months and was particularly noticeable during intense workouts, while sprinting, and when performing specific sports movements. Despite trying rest, ice therapy, and over-the-counter pain relievers, she found little to no relief.

During her evaluation, our physical therapists noticed a restricted range of motion in her hip and identified weakness in the muscles around the joint. A comprehensive assessment revealed that the injury had led to muscle imbalances and joint stress. We determined that the injury had caused a significant strain on the hip, exacerbating both pain and functional limitations.

The patient also worked with our sports performance specialists to ensure we met her athletic needs and performance goals. Together, we developed a tailored treatment plan that focused on pain management, improving her hip’s mobility, and strengthening the muscles around the joint to restore optimal function:

  • Manual therapy techniques helped reduce pain and stiffness
  • Targeted strength exercises helped improve the joint’s stability and prevent future injuries
  • Sports-specific exercises improved her efficiency and reduced the risk of re-injury

The patient began to see significant improvements after consistently attending her sessions and following her prescribed exercise routine. Her hip pain decreased, and her range of motion increased. She could return to her full training routine and perform at her best in competitions.

A Heartfelt Thank-You to Dr. Christoforou!

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Christoforou for his enlightening presentation to our Islip Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy staff! As a hand and upper extremity orthopedist from Orthopedic Associates of Long Island, Dr. Christoforou shared valuable insights on cases and positive outcomes for patients dealing with:

  • Ulnar drift deformity
  • Amputations
  • Syndactyly (a congenital condition that results in fused or webbed fingers or toes, occurring when digits do not separate in the womb)

In addition to his medical practice on Long Island, Dr. Christoforou devotes his time and expertise each year to the Guatemala Healing Hands Foundation. Collaborating with the foundation and the American Society of Hand Surgery, he travels to the region with a team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, therapists, nurses, and other volunteers from across the United States and Canada. Over the years, this mission has delivered crucial treatment to children with upper limb injuries and congenital anomalies. However, the mission extends beyond medical care; it also includes community engagement initiatives such as building schools and homes, as well as establishing sanitation systems and stoves.

Prehab and Rehab for Hip Surgery Success

Did you know that physical therapy is an important part of preparing for and recovering from hip replacement surgery? It’s true! We recommend you work with the team at any one of our Professional Care offices before and after a hip procedure.

Prehabilitation
Prehabilitation, or “prehab,” focuses on strengthening the muscles around the hip joint and improving mobility to set you up for a faster and smoother recovery. Prehab exercises may include:

  • Targeted stretching and range-of-motion exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Gait training and balance activities

Patients may also learn how to use assistive devices like walkers or crutches and practice post-surgery movements like getting in and out of bed or a chair.

Rehabilitation
Rehab begins almost immediately after surgery, with exercises becoming more challenging as the patient heals. Rehab typically includes:

  • Prescribed exercises to manage pain, help prevent blood clots, and regain mobility, strength, and function
  • Early mobilization is key to preventing complications and promoting healing.

Prepare and Recover From Hip Surgery with Professional Care!

The duration and intensity of both prehab and rehab vary depending on individual factors such as age, overall health, and the specific surgical approach. However, both are integral to a successful hip replacement journey by contributing to improved outcomes, reduced pain, and a faster return to normal activities.

If you’re planning for hip surgery or contemplating it down the road, contact us today to learn how our prehab and rehab programs can set you up for success. We’ll answer any questions you have and discuss what to expect at every stage. Call today to get started!
