McKenzie Method
Get lasting relief from back and neck pain and learn how to keep it from coming back.
Back or neck pain can take over your whole day. Sitting through work, picking up your kids, or getting a full night’s sleep starts to feel harder than it should. Maybe you’ve tried rest, medication, or quick fixes that only helped for a while. You deserve care that finds the real source of your pain and gives you the tools to manage it yourself.
Expert Care From McKenzie-Trained Physical Therapists
At the Professional Care Physical Therapy Commack location, our physical therapists are trained in the McKenzie Method, also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). Developed by New Zealand physical therapist Robin McKenzie, this approach is used by clinicians around the world to assess and treat back pain, neck pain, and joint problems. We know how frustrating ongoing pain can be, and we’re here to help you understand what’s causing it and what you can do about it.

How does the McKenzie Method work?
The McKenzie method is a patient-centered approach to treating back and neck pain. It is based on the principle that mechanical forces can both cause and alleviate pain, and it emphasizes the patient’s active involvement in their own treatment.
Our team will first work with you to complete a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, grouping them into subgroups based on how they react to particular movements, postures, or forces. The McKenzie classification system allows us to determine better an accurate diagnosis–and your best course of treatment.
Once your assessment is complete, our therapists will use that information to provide a detailed overview of which exercises will best treat your condition and which ones you should avoid. The McKenzie method focuses on patient involvement and education to help empower you to resolve your pain and restore your body to full functionality.
In addition to helping you treat your pain now, the McKenzie method also includes education about preventing the pain from returning. Patients are taught how to recognize and respond to their symptoms with postural corrections, targeted exercises, and strategies to prevent future episodes.
