How Physical Therapy Can Help with Rotator Cuff Injuries

Imagine waking up one morning, eager to start your day, but as you attempt to brush your teeth, the pain in your shoulder sends a searing wave of discomfort through your entire arm. Suddenly, the simplest tasks become challenging.

This scenario is all too familiar for individuals dealing with rotator cuff injuries, which can severely limit daily life functions. However, there is hope in the form of physical therapy that can help you regain strength, mobility, and overall shoulder function.

At Professional Care, our physical therapists understand how important it is to resolve your shoulder pain. We’ll get to the root of your problem and provide clear guidance to help you recover sooner rather than later.

The Impact of a Shoulder Injury

Rotator cuff injuries can disrupt your life in many ways, affecting your physical abilities and overall well-being. Some common limitations and challenges individuals face due to shoulder pain include:

  • Painful Movements: Simple actions like reaching for an item on a high shelf, combing your hair, or even tucking in your shirt can become excruciatingly painful.
  • Sleep Disturbances: Many people with shoulder injuries struggle to find a comfortable position, leading to disrupted sleep patterns and fatigue.
  • Limited Range of Motion: Reduced shoulder mobility can hinder your ability to perform essential tasks, such as putting on a seatbelt or reaching behind your back.
  • Loss of Strength: Weakness in the affected arm can make lifting even lightweight objects a daunting challenge.

For those grappling with these challenges, seeking help from Professional Care Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation can be a game-changer!

The Role of Professional Care in Your Recovery

We offer two proven approaches to addressing rotator cuff injuries:

  • Physical therapy can help you build the overall strength and mobility necessary to restore function in your shoulder
  • Occupational therapy offers specialized guidance that focuses specifically on the shoulder and upper extremity, with an emphasis on helping you return to daily tasks

We’ll begin by discussing your medical history, including the onset and nature of your shoulder pain, any previous injuries, and your overall health.

A thorough physical examination follows, focusing on the affected shoulder. This includes assessing your range of motion, strength, and any signs of inflammation or instability. To understand how your injury impacts your daily life, we’ll assess your ability to perform essential tasks like reaching, lifting, and dressing.

This information helps our therapists work with you to establish clear goals for your rehabilitation and develop a program tailored to your unique needs. Some of the techniques that we might suggest include the following:

  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on manual therapy techniques like joint mobilizations and soft tissue mobilizations help alleviate pain and improve shoulder mobility. These techniques have been shown to reduce pain and enhance range of motion in individuals with rotator cuff injuries.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: A customized exercise program is a cornerstone of rotator cuff rehabilitation. We’ll prescribe exercises that target specific muscle groups, gradually improving strength and function.
  • Home Exercise Programs: We’ll provide you with home exercise programs to promote continuity of care. Consistent adherence to these programs can improve rotator cuff rehabilitation outcomes.
  • Patient Education: Understanding the injury and learning how to prevent future problems is crucial. Our team will help you understand proper shoulder mechanics, posture, and ergonomics to reduce re-injury risk.
  • Functional Training: We’ll integrate tasks such as lifting, reaching, and carrying into your rehabilitation program to help you regain your ability to perform daily activities without pain or limitation.

Rotator Cuff Repair: Patient Success with Professional Care Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

Recovering from a significant surgery can be quite a challenge, and Professional Care Physical Therapy patient JoAnne Roubal understands this all too well. After a fall at home in September, during which she attempted to brace herself, JoAnne sustained an injury to her right shoulder. Following several days of intense pain, she sought treatment from Dr. James Paci, the Director of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for Suffolk County at Orlin & Cohen. JoAnne had already established a trusting relationship with Dr. Paci, as he successfully performed UCL surgery on her son in 2014. Therefore, she felt confident in reaching out to him without hesitation. Unfortunately, her diagnosis was more severe than anticipated, leading to an immediate scheduling of surgery to repair her torn rotator cuff.

Just 48 hours after her surgery, JoAnne embarked on her rehabilitation journey at Professional Care Physical Therapy, at our East Patchogue location, where she has done incredibly well! JoAnne not only stayed committed to her in-office appointments, but she also ensured that she adhered to her personalized at-home exercise routine, which proved to be highly beneficial.

“It has been such a pleasure working with JoAnne these past few months. She is genuinely a patient that any therapist would be thrilled to work with. She is not only friendly and has a wonderful sense of humor, but also incredibly dedicated to her rehab. This injury posed significant challenges, particularly since it affected her dominant arm. However, she was resolute in her determination not to let it hold her back, staying committed to her role as a mother and to her active lifestyle.”
