The Professional Care team is growing! We’re excited to announce we recently hired a new medical massage therapist, who will be offering their services at our East Patchogue clinic.

Many people associate massage with luxurious spa days, but massage therapy is quite different. Rather than focusing on relaxation and stress relief, massage therapy uses various hands-on techniques to provide therapeutic benefits for various conditions.

Our new massage therapy services offer a fantastic complement to the physical therapy, occupational therapy, and sports performance services we already offer. Today, we want to explore the benefits of massage therapy in more detail to help you understand how it can help you achieve your goals — no matter what they are!

Massage therapy aims to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote overall wellness. It focuses on the body’s soft tissues, such as the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia (a connective tissue surrounding muscles and organs).

Each massage therapy session is tailored to your needs and goals, including the specific techniques. One patient might benefit from gentle gliding and kneading motions, while another may require deep tissue pressure and other more vigorous targeted techniques.

While massage can help with relaxation, it offers a wealth of additional therapeutic benefits, making this new service an excellent addition to our clinic. It can support injury recovery, manage chronic pain, enhance sports performance, and much more.

A gentle, relaxing form of massage that improves circulation and reduces stress

Focuses on deeper muscle layers to alleviate chronic tension and pain

Designed for active individuals, helping to speed recovery, reduce soreness, and improve mobility

Targets the myofascia, connective tissue that wraps around the muscles, to ease restriction and reduce pain

Releases knots of tension in the myofascia and muscle tissue that can cause referred pain throughout the body

Massage therapy helps increase blood flow to areas of injury, which brings along oxygen and nutrients to the tissue. This helps to enhance your body’s natural healing processes.

Many patients struggle to complete prescribed physical therapy exercises due to pain. Massage therapy can provide acute pain relief to help make treatment more comfortable.

The first step in restoring your strength and function after an injury or surgery is to improve your joint’s range of motion, which helps restore normal movement patterns. Massage therapy can help loosen tissue restrictions so you can move more easily.

If you’re living with arthritis or fibromyalgia, massage can reduce pain and stiffness to help you stay more active in your day-to-day life. We can tailor our treatment to match your pain levels.

If you work with the Procare Athletic Performance Care team, massage therapy can improve your sports performance and keep you in the game. Here’s how:

Sports massage techniques help improve blood flow and prevent muscle soreness, especially after intense workouts or competitions.

Regular massage can help identify any muscle imbalances or areas of tension that may lead to injury if left untreated.

Massage therapy can increase joint mobility, making movements more efficient – and helping you perform better and feel more prepared for physical challenges.

Three years ago, playing at the collegiate level seemed impossible to Amanda (AJ) Martin who suffered an ACL tear to her right leg during her freshman year of high school.  But her operating physician, Dr. Alex Rothfeld, Sports-Medicine Specialist at Orlin & Cohen, her physical therapy team at Professional Care, and her PCAP athletic training coaches knew that with hard work and dedication to her rehab, she would one day fulfill her dream.  We are happy to announce that AJ has recently committed to Molloy University to continue her academic and athletic career, playing Division II Soccer with the Lions!

“We couldn’t be more proud of AJ, and her commitment to her goals.  She has always been a focused individual, which was apparent during her time training with our PCAP coaches.  We wish her the very best in her academic and athletic endeavors at Molloy!”

Local Baseball and Softball Players on Long Island are gearing up for their upcoming seasons with the Professional Care Pre-Season Strength, Conditioning, and Injury Prevention Program. This program includes an injury risk screening that identifies potential injury risk factors in athletes. Based on these findings, a tailored exercise plan is created to address those limitations and risks. Additionally, assessments of the Reactive Strength Index (RSI), broad jump, and top speed are conducted to establish a baseline for lower extremity force output.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Montemurro from Total Orthopedics and Sports Medicine for his informative presentation on Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injuries, which was shared with all attendees.

“At Professional Care, we are deeply committed to injury prevention. One of our fundamental values is community involvement, and we aim to contribute in various ways. For the past nine years, we have been offering this complimentary program to our baseball and softball athletes, continuously enhancing it as new research emerges in this area. There’s nothing more rewarding than assisting a patient in reaching their goal of returning to the field but preventing the injury from occurring in the first place would be even more fulfilling.”

Start by standing over a kettlebell with your feet just outside of shoulder width. Pushing your butt back and keeping your back straight, bend at the waist like a hinge and slightly bend your knees so that you can reach the kettlebell. Grab the kettlebell with a double overhand hand position. Dig your heels into the ground and thrust your hips forward slowly, keeping your back straight to lift the kettlebell. Slowly place it back down.
